The target of this entry is to create a new life centre for the city of Reykjavik in the Vatnsmyri area, a point of attraction for icelandic people and tourist from all the world. The three most important point of this project are: high density housements that allow the most quantity of free green space; landmarks and urban design that make recognizable the capital of Iceland for all people; pedestrian-level planning, that means that no private traffic is allowed on surface.
Description of the project.
The project plan the airport move out from Vatnsmyri. But the memory of the airport will remain in the three main urban axis and in the Aviation Museum placed in the old airport structure near the control tower. In Vatnsmyri, private traffic run underground. A park replace the wound of the Hringbraut and all private traffic on Vatnsmyri is placed on the underground traffic system linked directly with the surface building’s private and public parking. This eliminate surface traffic and parking, increasing the life quality of residents and visitors.
Surface transports are limited to a bus system served by the new transport hub, this means that large section of the surface roads are dedicated to pedestrian and bikers. Sheltered path allow people to reach home and commercial site. Threes and artificial wind-breaker allow the maximum comfort for all the people.Main boulevards are broken by a monumental square that decrease the wind-tunnel effect of straight roads. Amazing landmarks (those in the entry are only for indication) are placed in this square and in many places of Vatnsmyri to make Reykjavik more recognizable for its monuments.
Main monuments of the plan are: the great theatre on the north of the main square, the great museum area in the middle of the square, and the two towers at the end of the north-south boulevard. Those towers was designed under inspiration of the city’s coat of arms, so they take the name of Ingòlfur’s Pillars, in honour of the Reykjavik’s founder. This place is connected to the political and historical centre of the city by the north-south boulevard and two monumental “half bridges” that ideally join the centre to the road trough the lake. Other important place in the plan are the Science Park, The Southern Garden (that simulate vegetation and climate of southern cities), the Aviation Museum.
Phasing of this project is very versatile because, after making the main underground structure, the plan can freely evolve, our indication is to build residential e mixed commercial/bureau along the main axis and in the same time starting build of some public interest place like the theatre to catch the attention of the people to this area.
